Organ Mobilization

Organ or Visceral manipulation is a gentle form of bodywork focused on optimizing organ function by releasing tension in the soft tissue surrounding an organ.  Since most people seek out care involving disease, dysfunction or imbalance in a specific organ, organ manipulation is an effective, direct treatment creating lasting health and healing.

Conditions Helped by Organ Mobilization

Comparative studies found visceral manipulation, the work of Jean-Pierre Barral, DO,  is effective for bloating, constipation, nausea, acid reflux, GERD, swallowing dysfunction, chronic pelvic pain, endometriosis, fibroids and cysts, dysmenorrhea, menopausal symptoms, bladder and prostate issues, headaches, migraines, peripheral joint pain, chronic spinal dysfunction, post-operative scar tissue, post infectious scar tissue, whiplash, infant colic, etc.  Much of the effectiveness of organ mobilization is due to optimizing blood, nerve and lymph flow surrounding an organ.  When prescribing nutrition or medications for a specific organ, ideal blood and lymph flow creates the perfect environment for healing to occur.

Causes of Organ Imbalance

There are many different causes of organ dysfunction. Inflammation from food allergies, leaky gut, infection or autoimmune activity creates restrictions around abdominal organs. Injuries to the abdomen including motor vehicle accidents with seat belt injury to the abdomen or direct hits to the abdomen in sports, dance and other activities create scar tissue that can change optimal organ activity. In Pregnancy, the growing baby pushes abdominal organs out of the way to make room for the baby. C-sections, forceps and vacuum extraction can cause inflammation and adhesions around the uterus, ovaries and small intestines. Any surgery creates scar tissue that can impact organ health and movement.

An Example:

Let’s take the uterus for example. If the uterus is tipped to one side or the other from inflammation, infection, surgery or post pregnancy, it impairs blood flow through the broad ligament.  The broad ligament holds the fallopian tubes and ovaries and carries blood supply to the ovaries. Now hormonal messages become muffled and the optimal hormone balance is disrupted because the master control for hormones in the brain cannot communicate through hormonal signals carried in the blood as easily as it normally would. This can cause dysmenorrhea, cysts, fibroids, infertility, etc.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine, many disorders of organs are due to stagnation of blood and lymphatic flow.  Organ mobilization addresses all of these issues in a gentle, long lasting way.  Improving organ mobility often improves overall structural integrity of the entire body. Tension held in ligaments attached to organs can cause upper back, neck and low back pain. By releasing the tension around an organ, many musculoskeletal conditions can improve.

Organ Balancing Techniques

There are many different ways that organs can be mobilized from connective tissue mobility techniques, stimulating reflex points, gemmotherapy, gemstone balancing and active release through pressure or thrust.  Each technique is focused on returning an organ to its optimal surroundings.  From my experience, I have seen patients avoid surgery for a variety of conditions, take less medications and supplements and have significant pain relief though organ mobilization.  Generally treatments are long lasting and restorative in nature.
